Mountaineers show off balance at Mines
The Western State Indoor Track and Field team came away with six first-place finishes and four NCAA Division II Provisional Qualifying marks at Jan. 20 Joe Davies Invitational at Colorado School of Mines.
In the field events, Western scored five victories. Senior Michael Gusbeth won the Men's Weight Throw with a toss of 60-07.75. Teammate Chris Nash was third at 49-10.50 and
Jeremiah Giambartolomei, of Kittredge, was fourth at 49-05.75.
On the women's side, Ashley Stephens finished second at 43-02.50 and also won the Shot Put with a career best throw of 43-02.50.
Freshman Domonique Bingham bettered her NCAA Provisional Marks in both the Triple Jump and Long Jump. Bingham won the Triple Jump with a leap of
39-01.75 and finished second in the Long Jump at 18-07.00. Also in the women's Long Jump, Jourdan Otis finished fourth with a jump of 17-08.25 and on the men's side Ablazah Swofford finished third at 22-04.25.
Freshman Airrie Robinson won her second straight Pole Vault with a vault of 10-11.75. Teammates Chelsea Murray (9-06) and Casey Hagen (9-06) finished
second and third. In the men's Pole Vault, Eric Mattison finished third at 14-09 and Chris Johnston finished fourth at 14-03.25.
Freshman Cody Sanders won the men's High Jump with a career best jump of 6-06.75 and teammate Jacob Becker turned in a career-best jump of 6-04.75 to finish fourth.
In the track events, Elsa Goshu won the women's Mile with a time of
5:36.22, while Oliver Bodor and Kim Hogarth scored Provisional Marks on the men's side. Bodor finished second in 4:19.63 and Hogarth finished third in
4:21.38. Hogarth also finished second in the 3,000 with a time of 8:41.75.
Eric Dunn led the Western hurdlers with a third place finish in the 60 Hurdles with a time of 8.47. Ablazah Swofford finished fourth in 8.56 and Sanders finished fifth in 8.79. Swofford also finished second in the 200 in 23.56.
In the 800, Scott Dahlberg (1:58.25) and Megan Johnson (2:24.41) both finished third.
In the women's 200, Katie Montgomery finished third in 27.59 and was followed by Hagen (27.65), Bingham and Meyer (27.73).
