Evergreen Cougars send Delta home


The Evergreen Cougar boys basketball team sent their opponents the Delta Panthers home with a 30-point loss Feb. 25.

The final score was 71-31 in the first round of state tournaments. Evergreen, a 4A team with an 18-6 record, plays in the Ron Shavlik region. Their next game Feb. 28 will be against Thomas Jefferson (15-8) at Thomas Jefferson.


Fast break offense and aggressive defense by Evergreen led to domination in the first quarter that was not to be relinquished.

Few opportunities were missed by the Cougars and the Delta team did not find a rhythm.

At the end of the quarter EHS led by 20 points at 29-9

Second quarter saw a more even competition with each team scoring nine points.

The Cougars kept up their aggressive defense holding Delta scoreless for over five minutes of play.

The Cougars appeared to be somewhat sloppy compared to the first quarter. Halftime score was 40-18.

In the beginning of the second half, Delta made some adjustment on defense denying penetration, forcing the Cougars to shoot from the perimeter, however Evergreen responded to the challenge. The score at end of third 51-27.

At beginning of fourth quarter Delta attempted to apply full court pressure. The Cougars broke the pressure by down court passes.

Shooting percentage by Evergreen increased using both perimeter shooting and backdoor scoring.
