Forty boxers and their families provided two evenings of knock out entertainment at Clear Creek High School for a Colorado Junior Golden Gloves tournament July 6 and 7.
The boxers, all aged between 8 and 17, hailed from the Denver metro area and, in the case of
Jordan Howard, from Clear Creek County. Howard was the only Clear Creek Golddigger who competed in the tournament, although his team consists of a couple dozen athletes during the school year.
One of the highlights for the athletes was competing in front of
Louie Byrd, a boxer from Denver who won the 2007 Junior Olympic National Championship in the light flyweight division in Michigan in June.
Although some of the bouts were stopped by officials, most went the three-round distance, thrilling the audience with the athletes' tenacity, stamina and skills.
In addition to Clear Creek High, the boxers represented the Atencio, North Denver Tigers, D-Town, Hard Knocks, Red Shield, Brotherhood, Backyard Brawlers, Knock Around, Longmont, Dona Ana, E-Z and Thornton Police Athletic League teams.
Joe Love, a 16-year-old, was "unattached" to a formal team.
Beau Campbell, coach of Clear Creek High's boxing team and an official at this tournament, plans to host another event this fall during the school year.
