Regis adds pharmacy doctorate degree
Contributed by: Kelli Berhost on 1/30/2007

Denver, CO -- With a large market need for pharmacists, Regis University will bring a number of skilled practitioners to the healthcare industry in the coming years.

In an announcement made Jan. 30, Regis University will add a doctor of pharmacy program to the Rueckert-Hartman School for Health Professions (RHSHP). The university will follow processes established by the pharmacy accrediting agency, the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), with a goal of admitting the first students in Fall 2008. The search for a dean will begin immediately.

The decision to execute the program was in direct response to the demand for workers in the medical field. By 2020, the pharmaceutical industry is projecting a shortage of 157,000 workers nationwide.

"The demand for pharmacists is great and the job market is an attractive one, so it is not surprising that, nationwide, schools of pharmacy have many more applicants than they can accept," says Patricia Ladewig, academic dean of RHSHP. "Regis University has a strong reputation for preparing excellent professionals in nursing, physical therapy, health information management and other health fields. Establishing a school of pharmacy is a logical next step for Regis in advancing our commitment to serve the health care needs of people of Colorado and beyond."

Dr. Terry O' Rourke, chief medical officer for Centura Health agrees.

"There is an increased need and demand of pharmacists for the whole community" said O'Rourke. "The role of pharmacists is expanding. It's not just traditional pharmacists anymore, they are out on hospital floors interacting with patients, making decisions about patients and educating the public about new medication."

With only one other pharmacy program offered in Colorado, and fewer than 100 pharmacy schools in the nation, students face tough competition and only have about a 1 in 10 chance of getting into pharmacy school. Upon completion of coursework, students will be awarded the PharmD degree.

Students in the pharmacy program will take semester-length classes and the tuition rate will be similar to that of Regis College.
