Water and sewer rates going up in Federal Heights
Contributed by: Tanya Ishikawa   on 2/13/2008

* This is a new blog created by Federal Heights City Councilmember Tanya Ishikawa, who was appointed in December 2007 to a two-year term. Federal Heights is perhaps most known in the Denver metro area and nationwide for its waterpark, Water World, owned and operated by the Hyland Hills Park & Recreation District.

Perhaps the biggest news for Federal Heights residents and businesses this month is the increase in water and sewer rates, approved by the city council on Feb. 5. The city raised rates to keep up with the rising costs of water supplied by Westminster, sewer services supplied by Thornton and infrastructure maintenance.

No one likes to see higher bills, but the city utility bills should only be increasing about 12 percent for average residential customers. An average winter bill for a family of three or four people is about $40 and an average summer bill is about $90.

The city approved its 2008 budget last November, and though the financial picture looks pretty good and relatively stable, a few revenues will be decreasing this year. In particular, Adams County will be reducing part of the road tax funds going to Federal Heights.

So, the city council and city staff are considering creative ways to find new income to support all its services such as ambulance, law enforcement and code enforcement. A property tax increase was even discussed at the Feb. 12 city council study session. However, the idea was not very popular.

Keep checking back here for more iinformation about the city including crime and safety information, special events, and business opportunities.

And remember: only about 100 more days until Water World opens!

Rising prices are always a sore topic, but a 12 % rise in water rates doesn't seem too brutal compared to the rise in gas prices. How's the experimental work on cold fusion coming along? Does anybody know if it has been rediscovered yet?
