Remember the service and sacrifice on Veterans Day
Contributed by: Department of Veterans Affairs on 11/8/2005

This year marks the 218th anniversary of the signing of our Constitution.  Among the words in the Preamble to that venerable document are the phrases ‘provide for the common defense’ and ‘secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity.’

From the tumultuous events leading to our War of Independence to the global war on terrorism, fully 48 million ordinary Americans have served Freedom’s cause ... many in extraordinary ways.  More than a million have died in its name.  And over a million-and-a-half have borne the wounds of war.

On Friday, in countless ceremonies across the country, Americans will pause to honor the men and women who bear the honored title, ‘veteran’ ... those steadfast Americans who gave of themselves what no one day of tribute can ever truly honor.  And what no words of appreciation can fully or properly thank.

On this Veterans Day, we rightfully stop to reflect on a 229-year old legacy of service and sacrifice.

May God bless our troops in the field ... and may He always bless the United States of America – the men and women of the Department of Veterans Affairs.
