Denver, CO - One similar trait that seems to run among those given the title "Greatest Generation" is the talent of storytelling. The men and women who served this country during World War II have an outlet to share their experiences at Regis University's Stories from Wartime speaker series.
An annual series of presentations and panel discussions, veterans share their personal stories of life during war every Tuesday evening from January through April. With subjects ranging from Pearl Harbor to the Holocaust, the presentations are part of a history course on World War II taught by Dr. Dan Clayton, history professor at Regis and director of the Center for the Study of War Experience.
A cornerstone of the University, the Center for the Study of War Experience serves as an educational archive to collect and preserve the memories of war veterans with manuscripts, memoirs and more than 300 hours of video-recorded testimonies by veterans that bear witness to the experiences of war.
Highlighted programs of this semester's series are:
· The Air War, February 6:
A focus on the experiences of combat veterans who flew in B-17 and B-24 bombers on missions over Germany and occupied Europe. The men participating will give detailed accounts of their time flying against Germany's Luftwaffe and substantial air defenses in the effort to destroy the heart of the Third Reich's war machine.
·
Forgotten War Stories, March 20:
The many divisions that separated Americans during the war years are not often recalled in popular memory. This evening's topic will be the experiences of America's immigrants and ethnic/racial minorities during WWII.
·
How We Remember War, April 17:
This program introduces the audience to members of the community who have lost loved ones during war and examines how those losses have affected the way in which war is recalled by the grieving. The evening also will include a segment in which some veterans from earlier panels will return and discuss the specifics of how they remember their service.
The Stories from Wartime presentations are held from 6 to 8 p.m. every Tuesday from January 23 through April 24 in the Science Building Amphitheater at Regis University, 50th and Lowell. Seating is limited but all presentations are open to the public at no charge, a full schedule is listed below. For more information about the speaker's series or Center for War, contact Kelli Berhost at 303-964-5195.
