Meals on Wheels has become much more than just handing a homebound client a warm meal. It offers nourishment a healthy meal alone can't touch.
Each year the month of March is designated as MARCH FOR MEALS, by the Meals on Wheels Association of America. The Senior Hub Meals on Wheels program in Adams County is a member of this national organization, and will once again participate in the event. One focus of this campaign is to increase public awareness of the service, so that no homebound senior goes hungry. The campaign commemorates the enactment of the law that included senior meal programs in the Older Americans Act. The remaining campaign goals are to promote volunteer recruitment, and expand fund raising sources needed to enable seniors in need of meals, but unable to assist with any of the cost of the meal, to receive this valuable service.
On Monday, March 17th, Meals on Wheels funders have been invited to observe their funds at work and assist with meal delivery.
Tuesday, March 18th, policeman from each city in which meals are delivered, will accompany volunteers on the routes. Wednesday, March 19th, is national Mayors for Meals day.
Mayors from each city have been invited to deliver to clients from their city. Thursday and Friday, Adams County Commissioners, Senior Hub Board Members, and community leaders have been invited to join the Meals on Wheels volunteers as they deliver. Staff will be sharing information about the service with various senior residences and groups throughout the month. If you or your group would like to participate in this event, we would love to hear from you by phone or E-mail.
We want to encourage everyone to JOIN US, THURSDAY, MARCH 20TH at "ROSITA'S MEXICAN RESTAURANT", 8050 Federal Boulevard, Westminster, any time throughout the day. This will be a special fund raiser to increase funds needed to subsidize meals for potential clients. These funds will enable clients in need of the service, but unable to assist with any portion of the cost of a meal, to receive a daily, warm, nutritious meal. Just let your wait person know you want to assist Meals on Wheels, and a portion of your bill will be donated to the Senior Hub Meals on Wheels program.
If you are an Adams County resident, homebound, having difficulty preparing a main meal, and not driving, and you, or someone you know, would benefit from the service, please call 303 426-4408 and ask to speak with someone in the Meals on Wheels department. Once qualified, you will not only receive a daily warm meal, but the care, concern, and assistance of remarkable volunteers. We recently received a letter commending two Meals on Wheels volunteers for saving a client's life. Upon entering the client's residence, they smelled gas, and insisted on calling the gas company. The gas dryer connection was leaking and they prevented a very dangerous and probably fatal tragedy.
Meals on Wheels volunteers assist their clients with many kind, caring, heartfelt endeavors. In just one week, the staff received several calls thanking for the assistance clients had received during our last snowfall. A Westminster volunteer insisted on picking up the restaurant meal for each of her clients in Commerce City, who normally receive that meal, even though we had cancelled meal service that day, due to the snowy conditions. Another volunteer delivered home made soup and muffins to each client on the same snowy day we had cancelled our normal delivery service. Another client was surprised and overjoyed to find her Senior Hub Meals on Wheels volunteer shoveling her sidewalk and driveway, even though normal delivery had been suspended.
If you could benefit from this service or would like to participate as a volunteer, please contact us by phone or E-mail at Senior Hub Meals on Wheels; 2360 West 90th Avenue; Federal Heights, Colorado 80260. Phone number: 303 426-4408 or E-mail:mhafner@seniorhub.org.
