Hi, Steve ...
I read about the addition of Suka to your family and congratulate you
on becoming owned by such an entertaining and intelligent companion. I did want to correct one misconception you mentioned: Cockatiels ARE parrots. They are a member of the cockatoo family. Generally, parrots are known as hookbills, for obvious reasons, and everything from the smallest lovebird and parakeet to the largest hyacinth macaw is a parrot.
I'm sure you'll be doing much googling on the internet to learn more about Suka, and I invite you to check out www.birdhobbyist.com, where
you can exchange messages, read articles, and join chats that are mostly about parrots.
I am owned by three parrots: Two macaws and an umbrella cockatoo. One of my 20-year-old rescue macaws just surprised me; I've had him seven years, was told he was definitely male, but "he" just laid two eggs! As you'll discover, if you haven't already, a parrot is very much unlike a dog or a cat as a companion: High maintenance attention-wise, messy, loud (in my case) but an interaction that can't be defined.
So enjoy Suka and become a NEB (Never Enough Birds).
