Sporting American Culture
Contributed by: Bonnie Wetherbee on 7/17/2008

I love the Rockies because they mean American culture to me. I'm a high school ESL teacher. I teach students from all over the world who have come with their families to the United States as refugees, workers, and most frequently as people who want better educations and better lives. I love learning about all their cultures and then sharing my United States' culture with them. They are eager to understand and enjoy American life, and of course that includes baseball and the Rockies. What is more American than hot dogs and rootbeer in the 7th inning stretch at a Rockies Game??! We have studied the history and rules of baseball, learned the words to the National Anthem, practiced our "Hey batter batter"s and of course followed every step of last season. We have the roster posted on our classroom wall. It would be so much fun to take them to a real game! They will be fans forever!
