More than 600 elementary school musicians wrapped up the school year with four spring concerts featuring an eclectic music mix; everything from classics by Mozart and Tchaikovsky to Disney favorites like 'Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.'
Students smiled and bowed as parents clutching cameras and camcorders waved and applauded. It was a fitting finale to a year of fun and hard work.
The Cherry Creek Elementary Instrumental Music Programgives youngsters from all of the district's elementary schools the opportunity to participate in several musical groups. Third through fifth grade students can join First Year Orchestra or Advanced Orchestra. Fourth- and fifth-graders can join First Year Band, Advanced Band, Jazz Band and Percussion Ensemble.
Students meet before or after school twice a week at their own school, or one nearby. More than 25 instructors, who include current and retired music teachers and professional musicians, work with the students, teaching them music fundamentals and more advanced skills.
"It's a wholesome outlet and gives kids the opportunity to make connections and build relationships with other students and adults," said
Robin Braun, the program director. "Music education improves their cognitive skills, brings the left and right brain together, and supports academic achievement."
The Cherry Creek Elementary Instrumental Music Program was formed in the mid-1990s, at a time when school districts across the country were dramatically cutting music and art education. The Cherry Creek School District established the Instrumental Music Program as a self-supporting before and after school program. Many Cherry Creek parents are glad their children have the opportunity to participate in the program.
"I think music is wonderful for their overall development," said
Becky O'Rourke, whose son Ryan plays viola and drums. "It really helps with math - counting, rhythm and fractions. It's great to see so many kids giving it a try."
The Cherry Creek Elementary Instrumental Music Program accepts financial contributions and donations of musical instruments to help disadvantaged students participate in the program. To make a donation or to get more information about the program, contact Robin Braun at 720-554-2662.
