Review: Woody's Wood Fired Pizza
Contributed by: Brendan Leonard/YourHub.com   on 10/22/2006

Woody's Wood Fired Pizza
1305 Washington Ave., Golden
303-277-0443

I am biased in my review of Woody's Pizza in Golden because of the level of extreme hunger I was experiencing by the time I got there. I woke up Saturday morning and went for a 3-mile run, thinking that would be it for the rest of the day. Then my friend Nick called and wanted to know if I wanted to go for a bike ride.

I'll tell you what: Biking from Denver to Golden is not my usual pre-lunch routine. We had planned to maybe ride up Lookout Mountain, if we felt like it, but by the time we were coasting on 32nd Avenue into town past the Coors brewery, I was running on fumes.

Me: "I'm going to have to get something to eat if we're going to try to ride up Lookout Mountain."

Nick: "If we eat, there's no way I'm going to do Lookout."

Result: Instead of riding up Lookout Mountain, we eat the Woody's Pizza buffet.

I'm not trying to be overly positive here, but if I were on death row and I had to have a last meal, and that last meal had to be a pizza buffet, I would demand a trip to Woody's.

Grade: A
Napkins: Bandannas
Tablecloths: None

I thought $8.88 was a bit steep for a pizza buffet, but then I realized:
1) It had been six years since the $5.49 pizza buffets of my college career.
2) The pizza at Woody's is pretty great. Were the world to run out of cheese and pizza sauce, most of us could live on the crust of Woody's pizza alone.

The pizza buffet is accompanied by a substantial soup and salad bar -- my friend (and School of Mines grad student) Kurt had told me, "You've got to try the beer cheese soup" -- I declined, since most soups aren't very vegetarian-friendly (beef and chicken broth), but Nick gave them the thumbs-up and ate two bowls.

Unless we were at the restaurant on an atypical Saturday, the supply of buffet pizza never stops at Woody's, and neither does the flow of customers coming in the front door. I was impressed by the variety and the fact that there was not one, but two vegetarian pizzas on the buffet.

My only gripe? The bowls at the salad bar are not for people who like to eat big salads. I remedied this by making multiple trips to the salad bar.

Also, if Woody's would provide someone to ride my bike back to Denver after the meal next time, I'd appreciate it. Cycling is not a good aid to digestion of large quantities of pizza.

As a Mines student I live off of Woody's on Monday nights. That's when they do have the college night special that you remember. $6 (was $5 last year) for all you can eat pizza (no soup or salad though) and $2 pints of coors and $1 sodas. Gotta have your college ID though... When you go to the one in Golden make sure you sit in Beth's section, she's the best waitress there :-)

I have yet to experience the awesome goodness of Woody's, but this review might reel me in. Rob, have you ever attempted the Beau Jo's challenge? I'd like to someday.
