Going to the car graveyard today
Contributed by: Brendan Leonard   on 3/21/2006

I heard from the insurance adjuster yesterday. He offered me $2,828.91 for the hunk of bent metal and plastic that used to be my car. I said I'd take it, mostly because, sentimental value aside, it was worth much less than that.

I really began to hate driving over the past year or so, mostly because it seemed my car was always too hot. I lived in Arizona, then moved to Denver just in time for last summer. My air conditioning didn't work, and the driver's side window didn't roll down. I thought just having one window rolled down might create some air movement, but alas, it didn't. On my 22-block drive from the Rocky Mountain News building to my house, I had to stop at roughly 10 stoplights. No chance to get a good breeze going.

So this car accident business is actually a blessing in disguise. If I would have sold the car, I might have hoped to get $1,000 out of it. Actually, considering the market, maybe a little more than that. I checked around a little bit and found this gem for only $750.

Soon I'll be shopping for a different car. In speaking with my father about this, since fathers tend to know a lot of things about buying cars, I can tell he really has his heart set on me moving up in the car world to something that's a little more, well, reliable. I, on the other hand, am not in much of a position to make a "car payment," since my salary is pretty low and my debt is gigantic (They didn't really explain to me in journalism school that a master's degree wouldn't get me any more money).

So I'm looking for about a $2,828.91 car, maybe an old Subaru wagon or Toyota truck. If anyone has one for sale, I'd prefer it to have windows that roll down and air conditioning, but if not both, maybe just one of the two will be okay. E-mail me if you've got any leads.
