American Cancer Society - GOLDEN RELAY FOR LIFE!
Contributed by: American Cancer Society on 4/3/2008

What:

All of us have been personally affected by cancer in some way, shape or form. By working collaboratively we can provide an optimistic outlook as scientists continue to work diligently to find a cure for cancer. It is because of your generosity that we all have hope that a cure for cancer will occur in our lifetime.

Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society's signature activity and is the largest non-profit event in the world. Relay For Life represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported and that one day cancer will be eliminated. Relay is a community gathering and a celebration of life! This distinctive event provides a unique opportunity for everyone to participate in the fight against cancer.

The Golden community will be celebrating its 10 th annual Relay For Life on May 17 th and 18 th at Brooks Field on the Colorado School of Mines campus. Teams of people camp out and take turns walking or running continuously around the track. Relay is an overnight event that lasts 12 to 24 hours. The evening includes entertainment of an all night DJ, games, oversized bicycles, inflated jumping/bouncing recreational toys, silent auction, crafts for sale, AND we can't forget all the wonderful food donated by local Golden restaurants/businesses. While money is raised by team sponsorships, pledges, individual/corporate donations, silent auction, etc., money is also raised by the sale of luminarias. At dusk, lit luminarias outline the track in honor of those who we've lost to cancer and for cancer survivors. Names on the luminarias are read by each team captain before the "memory lap walk." The Memory Lap Walk and Survivor Lap Walk is during the Relay are very touching experiences remembered by all in attendance.

In 2007, the Golden community raised $50,000 towards the fight against cancer. This year, we are expecting 400 participants from the Golden area and have a goal of raising $60,000, and firmly believe that we will achieve this lofty goal.

Please sign up your team today! It's a guaranteed great time and a great cause!
