Golden Parks Division workers were out during a respite from rainfall June 4 to improve the flower bed in front of city hall.
Shawn Sprenger, parks supervisor, said the city's allotment of seasonal employees was in place and allowed regular employees to take on big projects. Sprenger said 11 seasonal employees had been hired to fulfill work done during the "grow season" from June to October.
Steve Essex, a regular employee with the parks division, was pulling weeds as Reed Cowan and Cassi Hay helped out on their first day at work.
Spenger explained the regular employees define an area in need of improvement and take action on it. Park employees have a variety of responsibilities to maintain the city's parks.
"The flower bed in front of city hall has been an eyesore for some time. The rain is good for the flowers but it makes the weeds grow. It's a high visibility area so we wanted to do something," said Sprenger.
Donna Pithan said she had worked for the city for four years.
In addition to pulling weeds, the gardeners were transplanting ornamental grasses.
Pithan said, "We're doing a makeover here at city hall. We will plant some Hostas and coral bells."
Golden Parks and Recreation Coordinator Amber Speedy said the Parks Division is within the city's Park and Rec Department.
"The gardeners in the parks division take care of all the city parks and the downtown flower beds. The parks crew makes Golden look beautiful," said Speedy.
