Get Ready.... Get Set... Go....Sputter...Stall...Stop

Why we fall through instead of follow through with our Goals.

Another New Year. We boldly affirm our New Year Resolutions... again! We're determined... ready... then usually by February we peter out.

Why is this? Why do we fall through instead of follow through with our goals.

Simply put goals are about wanting to achieve something and going for it. It sounds easy in theory.......Why then is it hard ... what are we afraid of?

Is striving for a goal, something we think is painful...?

As the great Mentor/Coach Tony Robbins said "We do more to avoid pain than to gain pleasure in life. The truth is that we can learn to condition our minds, bodies and emotions to link pain or pleasure to whatever we choose. By changing what we link pain and pleasure to, we will instantly change our behaviors".

It's not that our goals aren't good. They're just not potent enough. The purpose needs to be stronger than the outcome. There has to be a reason, the why behind the goal. We have to absolutely want something so badly that not doing it will cause us massive pain.

If we could link so much pleasure to what we truly desire, if we can totally immerse our self in that good feeeeling, wouldn't we do whatever it takes to get there? And enjoy the process?

Lets say your goal is to eat healthier and smarter. One of the things you want to stop doing is eating (a lot) right before bedtime.

For most of us to reach a goal we need to take baby steps.

Don't torture yourself. Proceed slowly. Be specific have a time limit - say 'I will not eat after 8:00 pm for two nights a week for two weeks'. Then gradually add one day at a time. Hold yourself accountable. If you need some support ask.

Remember link pleasure to why you absolutely must change something, link the pain it will cause if you don't.

Again little baby steps work best when wanting to achieve a goal.

Here are some helpful tips: Make your Goals S.M.A.R.T.

S- Specific
M- Measurable
A - Achievable
R- Realistic
T- Time/Date (specify)

It's also ok to modify your goals if necessary.

One Last Thing:

Write down Three Goals you want for the New Year.
Under each goal write why you absolutely must obtain this goal. (What's the reason)

Then for each Goal write an answer to:

How will I feel if I don't achieve this goal?
What is it costing me if I don't make a change?
How committed am I to this goal? (1-10 scale 10 is the highest).
What action steps can I take right now to obtain this goal?

Close your eyes step inside the picture of (your goal) where you want to be.
Feeeel it.
The power to create everything is in your mind.
Transform yourself!!
