Red Rocks Community College administrator Carolyn Mattern received the Paragon Award for Outstanding Advisors at the Phi Theta Kappa International Convention held in Grapevine, Texas on April 18.

Twenty-five advisors from among over 2,000 nation-wide were recognized with the award. The selection was based on nominations submitted by chapter members and college administrators. Criteria included the advisor's support of the development of chapter members as well as support of their participation in local, regional, and national programs. The Red Rocks chapter of Phi Theta Kappa has consistently achieved five-star status as well as regional and national awards for their service to the college and the community. Mattern is the Director of Student Life at the college, and has been the PTK advisor for four and half years.

The convention featured educational forums and general sessions with keynote addresses by Robert Kennedy Jr. and Fareed Zakaria Editor, Newsweek International and CNN Host. Over 3,500 students and advisors from chapters across the nation attended the convention. RRCC student leaders Lauren Goh, David Clark, and Ernie Navarette also attended the convention.

Phi Theta Kappa is the International Honor Society for two-year colleges. Phi Theta Kappa's mission is to recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students, and provide opportunities for individual growth and development through participation in honors, leadership, service, and fellowship programs. Membership into Phi Theta Kappa is by invitation, extended only to students who meet eligibility requirements. Founded in 1918, there are 1,400 chapters worldwide.
