Youth Leadership Jefferson County is a program that offers high school students the oppurtunity to learn and enhance their leadership skills while acquiring a better understanding of the community and its needs. Meeting once a month, the students learn leadership skills specific to the theme of that day.On the first of this month, the students practiced leadership through communication at the Arts and Media Day.
The day began with a bus ride to the KCNC CBS 4 news station. There we toured the station and had the previledge to watch the anchors as they prepared for the twelve o'clock newscast. After that, we had the opportunity to speak with people from the CBS 4 news station,
Rockey Mountain News, and
Westword. From them we learned about how stories are selected, and what makes them important to the public both at the news station, and at news paper agency. The class then went back to the recording studio and had the chance to record their own "newscasts." Reading the prompters was much more difficult than it appears, but it was a great experience!
After arriving at the Arvada Center, where we had started our bus ride,we joined an African Drum Workshop. Bob Hall, our instructer, showed us how to play several differnt beats on the African drums, along with combining those beats with three other instruments.
Then in a theater improve workshop, we responded to what other people were saying in a few different situations.By doing the drums and acting activities the class learned about the importance of communication among people in order to achieve goals. Whether the goal is playing instrumants together in harmony,acting out a scene successfully, or putting on a live news broadcast, communication is a key element in succeeding. It was another great day of new experiences with the Jefferson County Youth Leadership program.
