The 18 piece Jazz West Orchestra is approaching its fifth year of playing for dancing at Copper Fields Events Chateau. The orchestra, under the direction of Royce Ehrle, plays at 6:30 pm on the second Sunday of each month. April 13th will see the band on the stand at 4901 Marshall* in Wheat Ridge where the cover charge is $10 and the large dance floor has recently been refinished. (*Copper Fields is tucked into the curve where I-70 westbound and the Wadsworth exit make an arc.)
Copper Fields, a historic building once known as Vasa Park, was owned from 1930 to 1946 by the Vasa Order of America, a Swedish fraternal organization, according to Roland Nilsson, the group's historian. Ron D'Ascenz, a North High graduate, trumpeter in the band, and life long Denver resident recalls playing there many years ago after it had been taken over by the Veterans Administration. The band plays until 9:30 pm, playing waltzes, rhumbas, cha cha's, swing and all the other ballroom dance steps. There's a cash bar. For more information email
