How did youget involved in this business?
After working in technical consulting for many years I decided to change course and do something new. Nancy Smith and I combined her broad retail background with my marketing and creative skills to open a business unique to the area. I am a weaver and an avid art jewelry collector and Baby Doe's was the perfect venue for me to showcase artists whose work I admired and to support my habit.
What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
Baby Doe's combines carefully chosen groups of unique casual women's clothing and handmade wearable art (jewelry, scarves, and handbags). We look for great fitting clothing that feels wonderful. We buy small groups in order to keep each piece special - you won't see your new jacket on a woman passing you on the street. We've created a way for our customers to find items that reflect their personalities as well as an outlet to support local and regional artists.
What do you like best about your line of work?
Providing the opportunity for women to walk out looking and feeling their best - that WOW factor. We work tirelessly to find a unique assortment of clothing styles, colors, and fabrics that flatter many women and many body types. The best part, the fun part, is to see the look in a woman's eyes when she has found the perfect item or in a man's when he has found the perfect gift.
What is your business' biggest challenge?
While the economy is a big challenge right now, it has inspired us to find those special pieces at great prices so our customers get a lot of "bang for their buck". Quality, appeal, the cute factor, price, and value all go into it. We want our customers to know we are looking out for them, and we want women to know that they can afford to look their best.

Baby Doe's Clothing is not simply a clothing store - it is a place to meet an old friend or make a new one. It is not unusual to find local women chatting with visitors about where to eat, where to get their hair done, or what the best bike routes are. The Baby Doe's staff and customers form a community of women making it a great place to spend a little time. While our intention was to create a fun store where women would want to shop, we were surprised and are thrilled to have created a community.
