Andrew Romanoff, speaker of the Colorado House of Representatives, will speak at Red Rocks Community College's Lakewood campus on Thursday, March 13 at 6 p.m.
Romanoff, a former Red Rocks instructor, will discuss the importance of social sciences classes in a civil society and how concerned citizens can get involved with state government and run for office. A question-and-answer session will follow.
Romanoff was elected to the House in 2000 and re-elected in 2002, 2004 and 2006 from House District 6, covering east Denver and Glendale. He served as the House Minority Leader before being elected Speaker of the House in 2005, the first Democrat to hold that post since 1975. As Speaker, Romanoff oversees the operations of the House, chairs formal floor debates, assigns bills, and determines the composition of legislative committees.
Romanoff has made access to drug and alcohol treatment, mental health services, preschool and kindergarten the focus of his terms in the Legislature. In 2005, he worked with Republican Governor Bill Owens to craft Referendum C, the Colorado Economic Recovery Plan, and helped build the broadest coalition in state history to pass it.
When the legislature is not in session, Representative Romanoff teaches political science at the Community College of Aurora. He has also taught at Red Rocks Community College, Metropolitan State College at Denver and the University of Colorado's Graduate School of Public Affairs. He first began teaching in Central America and speaks fluent Spanish.
The event is free and open to the public. The Lakewood campus is at 13300 W. 6th Ave. The event will be in the Community Room on the lower level at the west end of the building. The college's Student Employment Office will provide information about social science internships offered through Red Rocks.
