Denver area residents have a rare opportunity to see and hear the future of classical music in one exciting concert. They can hear a likely star of the next generation of concert violinists, see a rising teen-aged conductor, and hear a symphony composed by a teenager who is being compared to Mozart.
These young artists will be featured with the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra on Sunday, March 30, at 3 p.m. at the Green Center, Colorado School of Mines Campus, 16th and Cheyenne Streets in Golden. The theme of the concert is:
A Look into the Future: Young Artists Concert.
You can meet the violinist and the conductor at a reception following the concert. If you know a youngster who is studying a musical insrument, bring him or her to this concert! It will provide an inspiring experience.
Kyung-Jun Kim, 20, winner of the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra's 2008 Young Artists Competition, will perform Prokofiev's
Violin Concerto No. 2 in g minor. The concert also includes the Brahms
Academic Festival Overture with 14-year-old guest conductor Ilyich Rivas of Venezuela. Maestro Dr. William Morse will conduct
Symphony No. 5 by 16-year-old Juilliard student Jay Greenberg, whose compositions have won international accolades.
Mr. Kim was born in Seoul, Korea. He attended the Juilliard Pre-college Program and is now a second-year student at the Yale University School of Music. Among his recent prizes are the 2006 Salon de Virtuosi grant and the 2006 Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award. He plays the Guarneri del Gesu "Moller" violin on generous loan through the Stradivari Society.
As an active recitalist and chamber musician, Kyung-Jun has performed in top venues throughout the United States, Canada, and Korea. He performed John Corigliano's Violin Sonata at the Graduate Center, CUNY, by composer's invitation (2006); a cycle of Mozart Violin Sonatas at the Brooklyn Friends of Chamber Music Series (2007); a Rising Star Recital at Buffalo's Kleinhans Hall (2007); and a solo recital at the Metropolitan Museum of Arts Friday Patronage Recital Series (2008).
