Elaine Sponsler
, a resident of Golden, knows that finding cancer in its beginning stages can mean hope for survival. Her cancer was detected early, and through surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, she is living life to the fullest.
As a 67-year-old former owner of a mail-order company, Elaine was scared at first, but through the support of her husband and friends, she knew she was "going to beat it!"
"Never once did I ever feel like I was going to die," said Elaine. "My attitude helped me through this. I am a very positive person."
Elaine was lucky. She was a candidate for MammoSite® 5-Day Targeted Radiation Therapy, and is now free of the disease. By volunteering for Voices of MammoSite, a Web site designed to connect the recently diagnosed with breast cancer survivors, and by talking to other people she meets about her treatment and survival, Elaine feels like she is doing her part to fight the disease.
"I enjoy e-mailing other women and offering help where I can," Elaine explained. "They need the support and encouragement from someone else who has been in their shoes. Voices of MammoSite is a wonderful tool to do that."
Voices of MammoSite is a program supported by a website devoted to connecting newly diagnosed breast cancer patients with a network of extraordinary women who have confronted the challenges of the disease-specifically those who have fought it successfully with MammoSite® 5-Day Targeted Radiation Therapy. The procedure is a partial breast irradiation treatment available to patients with early-stage breast cancer that can be completed in less than a week.
The web site allows visitors to watch videos of survivors' stories, contact them confidentially to discuss the challenges of breast cancer treatment and recovery, and find educational resources and mammogram reminder e-cards. For survivors, it offers the opportunity to participate, speak out, and lend their voices and support to the thousands of women who will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. The site also features educational information and a listing of local and national breast cancer awareness events and activities.
Voices of MammoSite volunteers are there to provide support, answer questions, and to be a shoulder to lean on during trying times. For more information or to speak with a volunteer, visit www.VoicesofMammoSite.com or call 877-566-9866.
