The Knott's Kids literacy program at Jefferson County Public libraries got into the Earth Day spirit in Golden April 15, where a trio of boys had fun creating sculpture from found, recyclable objects, such as CDs, plastic bottles and twigs.
A collaborative effort of the city of Lakewood's Arts and Outreach program (ArtVentures), the concept was to show children how recycling can become art.
Karen White
, with the city Lakewood and
Rene Yaws,
a Knotts Kids coordinator helped
Cory
and
Cody Cooper
and
Danny Acree
put together some
Alexander Calder
-like sculptures.
White said, "To celebrate Earth Day we want to show how recycling can transform a space."
She said she and Yaws worked for a year to put together the interactive program. Before the boys went outside to create their own sculptures, White presented a slide show of works by Alexander Calder and
Christo
as examples of artists who recycle found materials.
White said, "Christo is an artist who changes space, but when he leaves an area after an installation, he cleans up and leaves it in better shape than he found it."
Armed with 4-foot twigs, used CDs, plastic bottles and markers, the group went outside to create.
Several demonstrations will be held at Jeffco libraries. Go here to see a list and dates.
