FREE YOGA FOR PARKINSON'S PATIENTS

A safe environment, social connection and better coping skills are the focus of Joann Gibson's free yoga class for Parkinson's patients and their caregivers at Asana Yoga Studio in Golden. Participants gain self-confidence and independence by learning how to get on and off the floor, how to control anxiety with better breathing, and how to increase flexibility and energy. Joann, whose husband, Don, has Parkinson's, notes that "Once illness sets in, people can easily get isolated. Our class participants laugh a lot, care about and encourage one another, and appreciate being challenged, often showing remarkable determination."

Instruction is individualized with exercises done standing, sitting in a chair, or laying on the floor. On personally difficult days attendees may just stay in a restorative yoga pose on the floor for an entire session, still able to enjoy the camaraderie and soothing benefits of yoga. Joann notes that when he is stronger, more flexible, and mentally relaxed, Don does better. Since she wants others to benefit in the same way and feels at least two classes a week are necessary, she provides her services for free. Susan Merrill, owner of Asana Yoga Studio, generously supports her with donated space. Volunteers to assist class participants are welcome, and needed.

Joann became a certified yoga teacher because she passionately believes in the benefits of yoga. She discovered that body and breathing awareness and a focus inward offered her huge benefits. "You can't carry anger if you do yoga. I feel younger, energized and calmer, move easier and don't stress out easily. And my husband says I'm nicer to be around. Not only are his coping abilities better through yoga, so are mine."

Classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. at Asana Yoga Studio, 16399 South Golden Road. Neither a prior knowledge of yoga, nor level of physical fitness is required. Loose clothing is recommended. For questions or to volunteer to assist, Joann can be reached at 303-915-4971.
