Then & Now: Roadmaster
Contributed by: Richard Gardner on 9/26/2005

Since the first stagecoach rumbled up Clear Creek Canyon in 1863 the Roadmaster has stood watch over all this road's travelers. The canyon's stone sentinel was named by our early gold rushers, and has remained constant while its wagon road became a railroad in the 1870s, and a highway in the 1930s. My first image is a colorized postcard from circa 1910, and the second a photo I took myself on July 2, 2005. While the Roadmaster has remained the same, the railroad it stood vigil over has become a highway, and its barren landscape of trees charred from fires started by the locomotives has been replenished by nature's remarkable recuperative powers. My "now" picture, believe it or not, is a happenstance; while I owned the postcard I was not using it on July 2nd when I took that photo. I was just taking advantage of the closed highway looking for the best angle I could get on the Roadmaster! The original is a bit larger but I trimmed it to best show everyone the neat comparison.
