A construction crew on the Colorado School of Mines campus broke one of Golden's main water distribution lines this morning. A lot of folks were affected. Here is an update from
Dan Hartman,
our Public Works Director:
This morning a contractor working for the Colorado School of Mines completing grading work for the new fields just west of Brooks Field broke the city's main distribution line to the South Reservoir.
The break caused a sudden pressure and water loss through much of the 6000 pressure zone and we immediately began receiving calls about no water. The break spawned four other breaks, likely caused by pressure spikes associated with high water velocities from the initial break. The other breaks occurred at 16th and Illinois, 16th at Washington, Washington at 20th and Lookout View at East Streets. In all the system lost about 1 million gallons of water.
All breaks have been shut down and repairs are underway. The high velocities experienced in the system during the break has stirred up sediment in some locations so residents may experience cloudy water. If this occurs they should let the cold water run for a short period to clear the cloudy water. If water does not clear up in 5 to 10 minutes it may take a little time for the main line to settle so residents will have to wait. The water is safe, even if it has a cloudy or colored appearance.
Contractors that were completing other projects for the city have been mobilized to assist city crews to complete the repairs. We expect all breaks, except the initial one to be fixed and back in service by this evening. The main distribution line which sustained the original break will need to be relocated and lowered, and is currently being bypassed.
The line had been properly located prior to construction and location marked for the contractor.
Thanks to utility and other city crews for their quick response to these breaks.
