Every Saturday afternoon since September, 2005, a group of women (and sometimes a few men), ranging in age from early 20's to mid-60's, have gathered on west Colfax to stand for one hour in support of peace, justice and an end to violence all over the world. Standing in silence and dressed in black, these women are a part of a worldwide network called Women in Black.
While watching motorists drive past the weekly peace vigil, one will see a variety of reactions. Many drivers are in a hurry or speaking on their cell phones and don't appear to notice the women standing on the sidewalk, but the number of motorists showing support has risen over the last year, demonstrated by the number of honks, thumbs up signals, and "peace" gestures seen each Saturday. Every once in awhile, someone will demonstrate their distaste for the message of "Women in Black, Standing in Silence for Peace" that these women display on their banner.
Women in Black vigils began in 1988 in Israel, and since that time, they have spread all around the globe. Women in Black websites list vigil locations across our country and in over thirty countries around the world.
When asked why she participates in the local vigil, Betty Lynn Ferguson of Golden said, "I am honored to be a part of the international grassroots organization, Women in Black. While I stand in silence each Saturday for one hour, I consciously send peace to all peoples in the world who are suffering from war and injustice. This experience affects the way I live my life each day and gives me hope that someday this planet will be at peace."
The Women in Black at Denver West/Colorado Mills stand in mourning for all victims of violence, but also as a reminder of hope for a peaceful future. Like-minded members of the community are invited to join the vigil any Saturday from 12:30 to 1:30 on the southwest corner of Colfax Avenue and Denver West Retail Entrance.
