Fibromyalgia: science Is catching up
Contributed by: Fibromyalgia Centers of America on 4/19/2008

Fibromyalgia is a debilitating condition. It negatively affects so many aspects of life. Fibromyalgia has been referred to as "Life's Intruder".

The three primary symptoms of fibromyalgia include widespread pain, fatigue, and sleep disturbances. Rarely, however, do FMS patients suffer from only these three symptoms. In almost all cases, patients have other symptoms, such as headaches, anxiety, depression, poor memory, numbness and tingling in the extremities, cold hands and feet, irritable bowel syndrome, brain fog, lowered immune function, chemical sensitivities, muscle cramps, restless leg syndrome, trigeminal neuralgia, morning stiffness, and a variety of other symptoms.

For years, the cause of fibromyalgia has been considered a mystery. However, breakthroughs have occurred in the research of fibromyalgia, and the mystery is unfolding.

Science shows fibromyalgia to be the result of several "conditions" creating one big syndrome. Three systematic signs of fibromyalgia include hypoxia (decreased cellular oxygen), disruption of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis (hormonal imbalances), and increased sympathetic tone (oversensitization).

It is because of the system-wide nature of this condition that single disciplinary approaches to treating fibromyalgia have limited to no results. The conclusion of all of this evidence shows that there is not a magic pill or single approach that can cure fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is a condition that must be treated through a multidisciplinary approach that addresses the three systematic signs of fibromyalgia listed above, as well as individualized signs and symptoms, as each case varies to some degree.

Fibromyalgia Centers of America-Colorado has revolutionized the treatment of fibromyalgia by integrating a multidisciplinary approach that addresses the major causes of fibromyalgia. To achieve this, several specialized treatment modalities are required. Our research showed a great need for a facility able to serve fibromyalgia sufferers in the greater Denver/Boulder region. We have pulled doctors and experts of multiple disciplines that specialize in treating fibromyalgia, and brought them together to provide a world-class fibromyalgia treatment center right her in Colorado!
