In recognition of National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month and National Family Caregivers Month, the Alzheimer's Association Memories in the Making ® quilt will be on display at the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum (RMQM) in Golden.
The
Memories of Birds quilt was created from paintings by Alzheimer's artists who participate in the Alzheimer's Association Memories in the Making ® art program. Watercolors are painted in programs throughout the state and juried by professional artists for the annual art auctions held in Denver, Loveland, Colorado Springs and Pueblo.
Paintings of birds were selected from this year's Denver art auction and then transferred onto fabric squares. These were then pieced with vibrant fabrics and volunteers embellished each one using bits of lace, antique buttons, embroidery and even feathers. Each square reflects the unique style of 11 different volunteers who contributed 255 hours of their time. "Judging Owl" is the origional water color created by Jean May and embellished by Golden resident, Janet Spaulding. "Red Bird" was embellished by Golden resident Jean Decker. The quilt was assembled and completed by volunteers with Firehouse Quilts.
At this year's Denver Memories in the Making art auction, Drs. Michael Wasserman and Don Murphy of Senior Care of Colorado successfully bid on the quilt which has been on display in their offices all summer. It is on loan this month to the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum in Golden.
The quilt will be on display at RMQM beginning Tuesday, November 4. The museum is open Mon-Sat from 10 am - 4 pm and is located at 1111 Washington Avenue in downtown Golden. Admission is free for museum members, $6.00 for adults, $4.00 for seniors, $3.00 for children 6-12. Children 5 and under are admitted free. For directions go to
