Spring Whale of a Used Book Sale makes big splash

By the time the doors closed on Sunday and the volunteers began to tally the receipts, more than 4,400 people had attended the 2009 Spring Whale of a Used Book Sale. When all sales were calculated, the Friends of the Jefferson County Public Library had sold more than $57,000 worth of books and merchandise. Proceeds help fund children's and teen literacy programs like the Summer Reading Club, Knott's Kids and the Traveling Children's Library.

More than 170 volunteers gave their all to make this a great sale and by all accounts they pulled it off in spades! A special thanks to UPS who provided 10 volunteers on Friday and our local Kiwanis for their additional support. Local corporations and civic organizations who want to help at the October 22-25 sale should call 303-275-2216.

Books left at the end of the sale found some good homes such as Doctors for Orphans, Haxton Library, Colorado Corrections Libraries and local retirement homes.

Are you a nonprofit interested in receiving leftover books from a Whale of a Used Book Sale? If so, you may fill out a request form online at www.friendsofjcpl.org.

Children's book donations are especially needed for our October Whale of a Used Book Sale as many teachers, parents and schools look to us to help supplement their libraries and classrooms. DVDs, videotapes and CDs are needed. If you have any of these items that you would like to donate, you can drop them off at any of JCPL's 10 locations. Large donations (more than three or four boxes) should be taken to the Lakewood Library's drive-up loading area on the east side of the building. All donations will help fund literacy programs like the Summer Reading Club, Knott's Kids and the Traveling Children's Library.

Friends of JCPL is a countywide volunteer organization devoted to enhancing the programs and resources of the Library. For more information, or to join Friends, call the Jefferson County Library Foundation at 303-275-2240.
