Garden for community continues to grow

Community orchard to add more plots and greenhouses
Garden initiative blooms

A community garden initiative that began last spring has blossomed with the potential to provide fresh produce to Jefferson County residents.

The county announced that the nonprofit Feeding Many will open the first of three greenhouses in late November near the intersection of West Bowles Avenue and South Alkire Street, where already established garden plots and an orchard exist.

The 20- by 50- foot greenhouse will be designated for growing vegetables. The goal is to have three greenhouses up and running by next spring.

The second structure, a 20- by 98-foot greenhouse, is proposed as a solar greenhouse for fruit gardens and the third greenhouse will be for educational purposes for Jefferson County youth to experiment and learn.

The nonprofit was formed to support those in need through gardening. The orchard and plots are on nearly a half-acre on Waterstone Community Church grounds and provided a harvest this summer.

Feeding Many founder and president Shirl Smith said, "At least 30 families took advantage of the opportunity to grow vegetables."

She said an additional 24 plots would be added next to the existing raised beds.
During the season, residents of Jeffco can pick fruit to feed their families at no cost, however plots are reserved for $25 per plot, which includes water. If a family needs seeds, those will be supplied.

Feeding Many donates any excess produce to agencies, ministries and youth homes in the county. Volunteers are sought to help grow vegetables.

Smith said the first greenhouse comes with directions and would be assembled by volunteers. Recently a group of Boy Scouts built the newer raised beds and an Eagle Scout member made the water system his projects.

"I'd really like to get Girl Scouts involved, " said Smith.

Smith said the big challenge was a lack of funding. She has set up a Web site where people can make donations at www.feedingmany.org.

"People can grow whatever kind of vegetable they want. People from the community are welcome to decide how the greenhouse will be divided so the most can be used with the space provided," Smith said.

Hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
