Town hall to focus on state ballot issues
Contributed by: Julie Story on 9/10/2008

The South Jeffco Town Hall meeting scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 20 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Peak Recreation Center, 6612 S. Ward Street, Littleton, will focus on two amendments that will appear on the statewide ballot this November.

Jefferson County Commissioner Hartman is hosting the meeting, and has invited Colorado State Treasurer Cary Kennedy to speak about Amendment 59 and former State Senator Norma Anderson to discuss Referendum O.

"This is an educational opportunity for people to hear more about these ballot measures, what is in them and what they are intended to accomplish," Hartman said. She urges all Jeffco citizens, whether for or against the amendments, to attend this informal session, learn more about these issues, ask questions and voice their opinions about them.

Referendum O is a legislatively-referred constitutional amendment regarding the requirements for initiatives in Colorado. If voters approve the measure, it would change the way citizens place constitutional amendments on the state ballot for voter approval and provide a distinction between amendments to state statutes and amendments to the state constitution.

Amendment 59, known as the SAFE (Savings Account for Education) Amendment), would create a savings account in the state education fund that would include some of the money that otherwise would be refunded through TABOR rules.

For more information, call Commissioner Hartman at 303-271-8525.
