Why not promise me a new Mercedes?

I love politics. Not for its value but for its follies. It amazes me the depths that educated people fall to in order to try and seem like leaders.

Senator McCain claimed that he believes the war in Iraq will be won by 2013, and Osama Bin Laden will be dead or captured.

This is in contrast with his earlier statements that he would stay in Iraq for 100 years. Unfortunately, whatever his intent was in that statement it did not sit well with the public and so 2013 sounds much better.

Unfortunately, the Democrats and Republicans are currently arguing over a funding bill for the Iraq war, and in an odd twist of events, the Democrats are approving funding for the war and the Republicans are holding back support.

While I hope, the war in Iraq is over soon, I doubt Senator McCain will be the one to do much about Iraq. In the last fourteen votes in the Senate regarding Iraq, Senator McCain has missed 10, probably not the person to believe when he talks about commitment to ending the war in Iraq.

Since we are making promises we cannot we live up to, why not throw out every Republican's favorite talking point to increase their standings in the polls, Osama Bin Laden. About six and a half years ago, President Bush said, "The most important thing is for us to find Osama bin Laden. It is our number one priority and we will not rest until we find him." (September 2001)

So far President Bush's commitment has not produced the desired outcome. However, it seems Senator McCain is privy to some secret information, which will lead to the capture of Osama Bin Laden. As a dutiful American, I would think he should just come forth with that information or plan because if the President of the United States of America says the most important thing is for us to find Osama it should include everyone. What does Senator McCain have up his sleeve to accomplish this task where an entire country has failed? Absolutely nothing.

Unfortunately, when you get a Red Sox fan talking about his team he never shuts up, and when you get a presidential candidate making promises, he doesn't stop until he promises a wish-granting leprechaun in every house by Christmas with a Pot of Gold under the tree.

Senator McCain, fell right into it, the promise pump was primed with a little war and terrorism and out came several years of economic growth, a flat income tax system, ending world hunger, independence from foreign oil, a secure southern border, more accessible health care, a strong social security program, and an answer to, what does the Easter Bunny actually have to do with Easter.

I will agree, these are all great platforms but America needs to be aware that Senator McCain and most other politicians are willing to play on your hopes to get elected and when it comes time to make a difference, they are out making promises to a different group to raise re-election funds.

I agree. It's less common for Republicans to make lofty promises. That's always been the Democratic candidate's tactic.
