Visit Mortgage Crisis Victim At Petco

Nearly homeless due to his human family's home foreclosure, Diamond, a one year old, 13-pound Dachshund mix, is being fostered through Lakewood's Misha May mutt rescue. Although Diamond displays signs of mistreatment or lack of socialization, such as initial cowering with men, he is a sweet, mellow and quiet dog who will make a great pet.

Diamond, and other adoptable Misha May dogs and puppies, will be at these Petcos on Saturday, May 9:

Lakewood, 3 - 5:30 p.m., 475. S. Wadsworth (across from Belmar's Whole Foods),

Golden, 10 a.m.- 4 p.m., 17132 W. Colfax

Because Misha May is careful about adoptions to make the right match for its dogs, there are no on-the-spot adoptions. The rescue needs time to check references, fences, and more.

The numbers of "man's best friends" made homeless due to the mortgage crisis is all the more tragic, because with active early planning it may be avoided. Misha May's Lorraine May suggests people start planning when their finances first become strained.

* At the first missed payment, admit the situation could deteriorate. Ask friends, relatives and colleagues for ideas. Maybe someone will foster or adopt your dog.

* Look for a reputable rescue and share your dog's vet records with them. Helpful websites are petfinder.com, allbreedrescuenetwork.com/Rescue-List.php, and mishamayfoundation.org.

* If you cannot afford the standard placement fee with a shelter or rescue, ask them to waive the fee due to financial hardship or to sign an IOU for the future. If you call a rescue early enough, they will probably post your dog on their website in order to find the dog a home before you lose yours.

Misha May needs people to foster, adopt, and also help with fundraising. To learn more, go to mishamayfoundation.org or call 303.239.0382. Your tax-deductible donations will help save a dog's life.
