The dogs didn't seem to mind that the place wasn't completely finished. They were more interested in sniffing, snacking on doggy treats, and checking out the 8,000 square-foot playground at Canines' Canyon, a new pet center in Lookout Mountain that held a grand opening on April 15.
Owner Bill Bateman was outside spraying down the driveway as visitors arrived. A flyball demonstration had been planned, then canceled because of the high winds. "We thought it would knock the goals down," said owner Natty Bateman, who showed visitors an 8,000 square foot indoor play area, with two slumber rooms and space for 44 kennels. There will be Web cams inside and out, a dog-grooming salon and a retail sales area for pet food and accessories.
"We also have a boarding room for felines," Bateman said. The family, which owns five English sheepdogs, has a home on the hill just above the pet care building. The sheepdogs were observing the activities from their gated area.
Carolyn Salter, who lives in Genesee, said "We've already made a reservation for our two dogs for Memorial Day. I think it's going to be a wonderful place."
Joyce Meredith, of Golden brought her Shih-Tzu, Marcum. "He has separation anxiety, so I wanted to be sure they separate the age groups."
Mitzie Porter of Denver was preparing the people snacks. She will be the full-time veterinary technician. As a former Sergeant in the Army who worked as an animal care specialist. She said she was looking forward to the opportunity and brought her own Saluki, which she got in Iraq, where she was a soldier for a year.
Although workmen were still installing plumbing fixtures, Bateman said,
"We'll be open for business April 17."
The place is located on Lookout Mountain Road at 24060 U.S. Highway 40. For more information, call 303-526-9212, or visit
