Golden the latest in book club’s exotic locations

The Denver Read and Feed book clubheld its meeting in Golden last weekend. This group has been together since 1988. They usually meet in members' homes, but occasionally go on a trip together or meet at an interesting local place.

They celebrated their 50th book in 1992 by visiting a bed and breakfast in Oregon that specialized in book groups. Each room was decorated to celebrate a particular author. The group's favorite room was The Edgar Allan Poe, which featured a pendulum over the bed. Their 100th book was celebrated in Santa Fe, reading Death Comes to the Archbishop (which was set in Santa Fe).

Book #150 was celebrated in Grand Lake. Last fall, they celebrated their 200th book by traveling to Tucson and having dinner with the author of their book, These is My Words.

This time, they decided to "do" Golden. They met first at the Vintner's Cellar Winery, at 700 12 th Street in downtown Golden. There, they tasted several wines and selected some to accompany their dinner.

They then walked a block over to Clear Creek Books, at 12 th and Washington. The group enjoyed looking around the new store, then settled down to dinner and discussing the book. Their selection this month was The Master Butcher's Singing Club, about a German World War I veteran who settled in North Dakota. Windy Saddle Café brought in a great dinner which included beef pasties and a German chocolate cake.

The group chose to sit in the front of the store, so they could enjoy the old cars driving through downtown for the first " Golden Super Cruise" of the summer. By the end of the evening several of the members, who live in Westminster, Arvada, Denver, and Highlands Ranch had decided to move to Golden.
