The latest issue of the
Voice of Golden
(VOG) was downright nasty besides full of inaccuracies. As a former member of the Board of the Golden Good Government League (GGGL), a former Commissioner of the Golden Urban Renewal Authority (GURA) and a continuing watchdog of City Council, I was appalled by the negativity of this so-called newspaper expressed against good Golden organizations and citizens.
Despite all of the rhetoric about GURA, ask yourself if you are happy with downtown Golden.
Clear Creek Square is nearly finished as the last residential building goes up, Clear Creek Commons provides much needed senior housing and more residences will be added in the next year providing more downtown foot traffic. The completed parking structure and the new structure under construction will take care of downtown parking needs well into the future.
I spent a short time on the Board of GGGL and can assure you that they do not control anything or anybody.
What they do is encourage and support civic-minded citizens to seek City Council seats. They also have taken positions on the slew of charter amendments put on the ballot in the past 10 years. They are a true Political Action Committee and are registered as such.
To think that a group of 10-12 people can control the actions of duly elected City Councilors is preposterous. Even the
VOG
publisher couldn't control the actions of its candidates in the long run. It is refreshing to see that once people are elected, they fully realize their duty to the city, all of their constituents and supporters, and not just one person or group.
I left the GGGL Board because I felt they were not proactive enough to take strong action against the criticism by the VOG and its misstatements of GGGL, its candidates and the City itself.
The recent issue of the
Voice of Golden
continues its efforts to dig up the past with nothing but suggested misdeeds by those who have served the city.
I smiled when I read my own name as a former GURA member. Is that supposed to mean something or make a point? Do you ever read about the good things that happen in Golden in the VOG?
Not likely! Anyone who thinks that the VOG is a positive force in Golden should consider that all they do is rant and rave about those who serve and volunteer in Golden (formerly called insiders) and then pledge support for their own slate of candidates. Are they any different than GGGL in acting as a Political Action Committee? They think so and believe they are the free press and the voice of the people. I think not. At least I don't want them to speak for me, and neither should you.
Don't be hoodwinked by the fervor of someone who sends multiple issues of a one-sided publication to your house around election time and has filed or funded some 19 lawsuits against the city, city staff and city councilors which have cost you, the taxpayer, over $800,000 to defend. The city has won all of these legal actions that have reached a conclusion. Yes, Ms.
Olson
also has her agenda, and it isn't pretty.
