If you like what's happening now, vote for Baroch
Contributed by: Ed Dorsey on 10/14/2007

The two recent candidate forums that showcased Golden Mayoral candidates provided attendees and viewers with a clear difference in leadership styles and a clear choice in who should lead the Golden City Council for the next four years.

One candidate actually uses Leadership as a campaign theme. His yard signs shout it out and it is frequently mentioned in his literature and, of course, touted by him during the forums as what is lacking today.

Let's look a little closer at what he means. When asked at the Harmony Village forum to contrast his style with Mayor Baroch's, he replied that his would be more assertive.

He gave an example of reversing the city budget process so that City Council tells the City Manager what they want in the budget, which flies in the face of the City Charter and the City Manager form of government. He also supported the Historic Preservation Board in their quest to become a decision-making board instead of an advisory board. He tells us his vision of growth is one where we know where it will happen and what it looks like. He also sidestepped a question on sustainability mandates by saying the word mandate is confusing.

Does this sound like leadership or just more government control over what we can or cannot do. It sounds to me like we'll be seeing new mandates, new residential housing regulations and more government intrusion in our lives. Think not? Then I suggest you go back to when he tried to get City Council to take over the Public Art Committee.

Mayor Baroch stresses that his leadership style is participatory. One that makes sure other City Councilors, City Staff, City Boards and Commissions and you the citizen participate in the process. He believes for himself, that if you want to be heard, you must first listen. Nearly 80 percent of the respondents in a recent City survey said they were satisfied with the direction the City is headed in. Why change? If Mayor Baroch is re-elected, his opponents will still serve on City council for at least two more years.

As you can see, the choice for you is very clear. If you want more government in your life telling you what you can and cannot do, then by all means vote for a change. But if like me, you like what's happening today, and you want to be heard in an open and accountable government that listens to you and encourages you to participate, and respects your property rights, then don't change a thing and re-elect Chuck Baroch for Mayor.
