I wonder why is there no good music on the radio anymore. There is so much to sing about and so much to explore, where is the music of the times?
At least in the sixties when the country was torn apart we had the Beatles,
Bob Dylan and defining rock icons. In the seventies we had the great shows and excessive stars like Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin and Queen.
Then we turned the page to
Springsteen and
David Bowie. But then we got Poison, Motley Crue and Warrant. How is that for justice? Great rock for Girls, Girls, Girls; Every Rose Has its Thorn and Cherry Pie.
Since then we have had, Nirvana and Pearl Jam. I am not intentionally leaving out the singer songwriters like
Melissa Ethridge but as far as she goes, great talent but does she hold a candle against people like
Elton John or
Jackson Browne?
Where is the rock? Once Nirvana makes the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, who is left? Can you imagine in 2020 seeing Brittany or The Offspring make the induction ceremony?
Talk about the decline of Western Civilization, kids are willing to accept Linkin Park as an acceptable alternative to the innovations of Metallica.
Generation Y or better yet, Generation Why, why does your music have no edge? I know there is a shift and supposedly Rap has taken the place of rock but being open minded I have listened to rap.
Eminem sounded like some heroin addict reciting Dr. Seuss rhymes, and the rest of them remind me of why I have intelligence, to be able to recognize terrible music.
I flip through the dials quite often, unfortunately every time I listen to a modern rock station I get treated to underdeveloped, inartistic guitar playing and an over abundance of uninspired lyrics. Have you tried to listen to Nickelback, "I want to be a big rock star" Try wishing for some talent first.
Unfortunately, I am starting to agree with older generations and now have a bumper sticker that reads "I am not that old, your music just sucks." It does. Don't kid yourselves, its uninspired and unmemorable. We all write self-indulgent poetry in college, but most of us have the good taste not to set it to music.
Green Day had a good album in "Dokie" but that came out when I was in high school. Since then what have they done? When September Ends was played on Radio Disney and my 7-year-old thought it was great. I had to do a parental intervention and get her to listen to
Stevie Ray Vaughan so she knew what real music was supposed to sound like.
While I tend to think bad rock became popular with the rise Skid Row, the real decline probably came with New Kids on the Block. They reached superstardom with enough talent to make a church choir and inspired a generation of mediocrity with lyrics like "OOOO, uh OOOO, hangin tough." I can't imagine
JohnLennon showing up to a Beatles session with, "There is nothing you can do that can't be done, uh ooo uh oooooo!"
But the music companies bought the public's acceptance and ever since have given up on art for uninspired musical mass appeal. Major Tom became Mr. Jones and Ozzy became P-Diddy. No thank you, I will take a drug-addicted metal genius over a corporate flunky with his own clothing line.
Where is the music to define the generation? Sadly, maybe we are hearing it. All that we have is a bunch of "artists" willing to accept what has already been done; unwilling to make it better.
My sincerest apology to this generation, if mediocre is good enough where is your soul? What song defines your generation? I hope there is some secret society you all belong to where you get together and listen to driving guitars and savage rhythmic drum beats with someone singing for all they are worth like
Janis Joplin did on Piece of My Heart. If you do, could dub a cassette for me or burn a CD of that band? I would love to hear some rock on the radio again.
