The Brad Side of Things: Don't even start
Contributed by: Brad Bettag on 9/12/2006

There it is... Can you hear it? The roar of no-minded conservatives who don't have a clue what is going on. They are trying to start hysteria and drive fear into the hearts of every freedom-loving American. "The Syrians hate America" they say, "They are all terrorists over there waiting to attack us!" It's ok, put down the button to raise the terror level and take a breath.

If you have been sleeping in today, you will have missed the news that the U.S. Embassy was successfully defended against armed assailants:

So before you go and assume you know what you are talking about, read the story. As a person who has actually been to Syria, I can assure all Americans that Syria wants nothing to do with attacking America. If you read the article closely, you will even see that Condoleezza Rice even praised Syria for its help in stopping the plot. It was basically a group of renegade fanatics who wanted to voice their opinion in a very primitive and brutal way; simple as that. I seem to remember a certain small group of renegade American terrorists on a clear April day in Oklahoma City 11 years ago... I don't see the Administration declaring war on itself anytime soon.

Syria stood strong. All of the major cities in Syria are policed 24 hours a day by uniformed security performing duties from directing traffic to security at hotels and other buildings. It's football season, so if Syria as a whole wanted to damage its relations to the US, don't you think the soldiers there would pull the little trick where the offensive line doesn't block the quarterback and just lets him get creamed? If this is any indication that Syria on some level doesn't want to damage its relationship with the US, then I don't know what is.

Somewhere out there, in the deep heart of the Bible-Belt, there is some redneck wearing a Jesus Loves Me shirt waiting for the United States to declare war against Syria as a "Pre-emptive strike" (That word sends shivers down my spine, and makes our founding fathers roll over in their graves) to protect the lives of Americans here and abroad. Well my uncle in Aleppo has been safe from any problems there for the past 2 years, give or take the occasional taxi cab and crazy driver. His advice to both me and my father when we went over there, stay away from the embassy because if anything was going to happen against Americans, it would be there. Because the Syrians hate Bush and anyone who supports Bush and they are not alone. Ask the Germans, the French, the Spanish (who elected a whole new group of politicians recently, ones that wouldn't go along with Bush and his idiotic foreign policies).

I guess the biggest moral of the story concerning how to stay alive when traveling abroad. Distance yourself from Bush and his administration of cronies as much as possible. That, or just say you are a Canadian with a strange accent...

Golly gee-willakers; it's a good thing you enlightened non-cretin types are out there to demonstrate to those of us on the knuckle-dragging side of the equation that you're able to measure the (apparent lack of a) threat posed by the Ba'athist regime of Bashar al Assad - based solely on the experiences of a single Westerner who hasn't been slaughtered in the name of Jihad. Whew! What a relief! Now I can forget about Lebanon, and Hezbollah...and the Abu Nidal Organization...and the Arab Communist Organization...and the Arab Revolutionary Brigades...and Jund al Sham...and Islamic Jihad...and the PFLP...and, well, all of these: http://www.tkb.org/MapModule.jsp#Loc. Oh, and I can forget this, too: http://www.cfr.org/publication/9368/ (from that odious mouthpiece of right-wing propoganda, the Council on Foreign Relations).
