The Brad Side of Things
Contributed by: Brad Bettag on 2/4/2007

Repub... no Democr... no wait he is Republican, senator and presidential hopeful John McCain came out today calling out democrats on their "no confidence vote" in our troops when clearly it is a no confidence vote in our president.

In a very Presidential way, McCain again put words in Democrats mouths, effectively saying that this was a "demoralizing 'vote of no confidence' in the U.S. military because it criticized Bush's plans to send 21,500 more troops to Iraq without offering concrete alternatives." Here we go again with the whole yellow ribbon craze about "support our troops". I wasn't even born then but shouldn't the people who were alive actually learn something from Vietnam? There is a very coarse line between not supporting the pretenses and the handling of the war effort, versus not supporting the troops and their families.

Why must Republicans resort to questioning Democrat's patriotism and integrity when its is common knowledge that a vast majority of citizens (not just Democrats) feel that sending more troops to Iraq is a bad idea. Recently the Denver Post did a poll on this exact question and while I do not have the final numbers, the last time I checked a whopping 76% of all poll responders said that sending more soldiers to Iraq should not be an option.

If we look back to the "reasons" we invaded Iraq one seemed to be to set up a democracy in a authoritarian regime. But doesn't a democracy mean that the masses are represented by individuals to do their bidding for them? So thus when you are elected by the masses don't you think you should listen to the masses. And its clear to see that many republicans ( Bush, Cheney, McCain, etc.) are simply dancing to the music in their own head and are completely oblivious to what the American citizen wants. I've said it before and I'll say it again, that is the road to fascism. When an elected majority no longer listens to the people, and determines what is best for the citizens without any responsibility or accountability, you have the beginnings of fascism.

Because although it would be barbaric and may not be the best option, my solution would be to pull out all troops. Yes we lose face, but then Iraqis start dying instead of Americans, and suddenly they will realize... "Hey, no one is going to spoon feed us anymore, its time we get our act together and be able to handle ourselves". Also if this method is done, I believe that the US will actually gain better standing in the worlds eyes, because we have been fighting in an unpopular war that almost all the nations in the UN opposed entering into but we just gave them all the finger and went in anyway. So now once we leave the area, maybe we can resume talks with the UN and ultimately apologize for our wrong decisions and perhaps make amends with our allies.

So no McCain, Democrats do not have a vote of no confidence in the troops, they have a vote of no confidence in you and the presidents handling of any of Americas affairs any more. This is what happens when you have a country run by a monkey and a half dead guy with a heart condition. It's time for change not only with policy in Iraq but domestic policy, social policy, and corporate accountability. No more tax breaks and no-bid contracts for your buddies in Haliburton. This government in the past 6 years has demonstrated the definition of being unfit to lead.
