On July 5, a Jefferson County administrator held an employee meeting to discuss upcoming budget cuts. I and my two fellow commissioners all attended. The meeting was not posted on our schedules, in my opinion because both of my fellow commissioners were on vacation and the staff who handle posting did not expect them to attend.
Once there, I did not leave because it never occurred to me that the meeting had not been posted. The county commissioners are now being sued by the Landmark Newspapers (publishers of the Columbine and Canyon Courier and High Timber Times).
Because of the lawsuit, I can't say much. But I am committed to open government, to being as accessible and available to citizens as possible, and to making decisions in an open setting where the public and media are welcome.
I hope in the future to have all meetings Webcast in real time, although current budget constraints may delay this.
I welcome your input via email at kathy@kathyhartman.org or at khartman@jeffco.us.
The second email address is a public site and so any communication to and from it is open to public and media inspection.
Kathy Hartman is a Jefferson County commissioner for District 3
