During his final season at Mines in 2008-09, Weitzel compiled a 15-10 overall record with one fall and placed in the top three at two events (second at the Hastings College Open; third at the Northern Colorado Open). Weitzel, a unanimous First Team Academic All- RMAC selection this year, also earned Academic All-RMAC honors as a sophomore and junior. A two-time recipient (2007-08 and 2008-09) of First Team All-Academic honors from the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA), Weitzel helped guide the Orediggers to a second-place showing on the NWCA's 2008-09 NCAA Division II All-Academic Top 20 Teams list. Weitzel, who graduated summa cum laude from CSM in May of 2009 with a 4.00 cumulative GPA in Mechanical Engineering, was also the male recipient of CSM's 2008-09 President's Senior Scholar Athlete Award.
A 5'5" senior midfielder from Villa Park, Calif. (Villa Park High School), Diane Wetzel was a four-year captain for the CSM women's soccer team. As a senior in 2008, Wetzel started 20 of her 21 matches played and earned Third Team All-RMAC honors. Wetzel, who garnered First Team Academic All-RMAC and First Team NSCAA/adidas College Scholar All-West Region recognition during her final season at Mines, was selected as the female recipient of CSM's 2008-09 President's Senior Scholar Athlete Award. An Honorable Mention All-RMAC pick in 2007, Wetzel also garnered Academic All-RMAC honors as a sophomore and junior. A two-time Team MVP (freshman, sophomore), Wetzel helped guide the Orediggers to their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament last fall. Wetzel concluded her career at Mines with five goals and six assists (16 total points).
