CSM Volleyball falls to Metro State, 3-1
The Colorado School of Mines volleyball team, ranked ninth in the latest Southwest Region poll, fell to Metro State, 3-1, in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action Oct. 21 in Volk Gymnasium. Metro, ranked second in the Southwest Region, lost the first game, 25-30, but came back to win three straight, 30-27, 32-30, 30-18.
CSM (16-7, 8-6 RMAC) was led by senior outside hitter Samantha Bauer (Lakewood) who tallied a team-high 16 kills and hit .361. Junior outside hitter Caitlin Mabe (Lakewood) added 11 kills, while senior libero Sarah Alsbrooks (Paola, Kan.) recorded a match best 31 digs.
Metro (15-6, 11-3 RMAC) was led by Julie Green who produced a match best 18 kills. Sheena Bohannon (16), Stefanie Allison (17) and Megan Wittenburg (11) also reached double digits in kills, while Gabrielle Curtis dished out 55 assits.
CSM Women's Soccer tops Johnson and Wales, 2-0
The Colorado School of Mines women's soccer team concluded its inaugural season with a 2-0 nonconference win over Johnson and Wales at Brooks Field on Oct. 22.
Junior forward Rachel Grabski (Manitou Springs) gave the Orediggers a 1-0 lead 13 minutes into the match on a tally off an assist from freshman midfielder Ashley Laughlin (Sevierville, Tenn.).
Freshman defender Caitlyn Ruegger (Gainesville, Fla.) added a penalty kick at the 81:19 mark for CSM's second goal of the match.
The win ended CSM's season at 7-8 overall.
CSM Men's and Women's Cross Country teams finish third at RMAC Championships
Both the men's and women's cross country teams finished third Oct. 22 at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships. Both were third behind Adams State and Western State.
On the women's side, Adams State won with a score of 25 while Western was second with 71. Colorado School of Mines finished third with 74 points just three points behind Western. The women were led by senior Heather Beresford (Colorado Springs) who finished the 6k course in tenth overall with a time of 25:07. Her tenth place finish was just good enough to earn her All-RMAC accolades. The top ten on each the men's and women's side earn All- RMAC.
CSM had two men in the top ten also earning All -RMAC status. The men were paced by juniors Laurence McDaris and Joel Hamilton (Colorado Springs). McDaris finished sixth in the 8k race with a time of 27:30 while Hamilton was seventh with a time of 27:40. The men finished behind Adams State who was first with 25 points while Western was second with 40, the Orediggers finished with the same score as the women, 74.
CSM will return to action Nov. 5 when they will compete for a chance to make it to nationals in Fort Hays, Kansas at the Regional Championships. The top five teams qualify for nationals on the men's side while only the top four qualify on the women's side.
CSM Football wins at New Mexico Highlands, 45-37
The Colorado School of Mines football team picked up a 45-37 victory over New Mexico Highlands in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action Oct. 22 at Perkins Field and improved to 5-4 overall and 5-1 in the RMAC.
The win also enabled CSM to climb into a first place tie with Nebraska-Kearney in the conference after the Lopers were dealt a 28-22 loss by Fort Lewis earlier today. UNK now stands at 7-2 overall (5-1 RMAC), while Fort Lewis is 5-3 overall (5-2 RMAC).
CSM trailed 10-0 after the first quarter, but outscored NMHU, 28-7, in the second period to take a 28-17 halftime lead.
Junior running back Bryan Florendo (Crete, Neb.) did most of the damage as he scored three rushing touchdowns in the quarter from 26, 47 and 2 yards. He also threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Justin Gallas (Westminster, Colo.).
The teams traded two touchdowns apiece in the third quarter with CSM junior quarterback Garrett Mehl (Crete, Neb.) throwing a 68-yard scoring strike to sophomore wide receiver Michael Curl (Houston, Texas) and running in for a 2-yard touchdown. Sophomore kicker Aaron Abel (Cheyenne, Wyo.) booted a 44-yard field goal with 35 seconds left to give CSM the final margin of victory.
Florendo ran 20 times for 140 yards, while Curl caught three passes for 91 yards and a score. Mehl finished 11-of-18 for 152 yards and a touchdown and also ran 15 times for 76 yards and a score.
Junior linebacker Danny Sprague (Wheat Ridge) led the defense with a game-best 15 tackles, including one for loss, while senior linebacker Jared Heath (Highlands Ranch) posted 13 tackles and forced a fumble.
NMHU (1-8, 0-6 RMAC) was led by Ronnie Simpson who completed 17-of-32 passes for 250 yards and four touchdowns and also ran 19 times for 80 yards. Ikaika Neizman caught seven balls for 133 yards and two scores, while Brian Trujillo led the Cowboy defense with 10 stops.
CSM will return to action Oct. 29 when it travels to Mesa State for a 1:00 pm kickoff. It will be the final regular season road game for the Orediggers.
CSM Volleyball sweeps Colorado Christian, 3-0
The Colorado School of Mines volleyball team moved within two wins of setting a single season school record with a 3-0 triumph over Colorado Christian in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action Oct. 22 in Volk Gymnasium. Game scores were30-24, 30-20, 30-18.
CSM improved to 17-7 (9-6 RMAC) with the win and needs one more win to tie the school record of 18 wins set in 1997.
CSM was led by senior outside hitter Samantha Bauer (Lakewood, Colo.) who produced 10 kills. Senior libero Sarah Alsbrooks (Paola, Kan.) registered a match best 18 digs and reached 538 for the season. She needs 18 more to break her single season record of 555 set last season. Sophomore setter Ashley Pagel (Brighton, Colo.) dished out 35 assists.
CCU received a match best 11 kills from Trisha Witkop, while Audra Tindall handed out 28 assists.
CSM will return to action Oct. 25 when it hosts Regis at 7:00 pm in Volk Gym.
