Lakewood Senior High School's Gymnastics team will host its second annual "Think Pink" meet for Breast Cancer Awareness on September 25 th, 2007. Lakewood's team with the generous help of GK Elite Sportswear will be wearing pink uniforms with the Breast Cancer Awareness ribbon jewel on the front.
The idea for the annual meet came from head coach Mary Beth Artemis who is a 4 year survivor of breast cancer. "I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer when my daughter
Jennifer Salfen was a student and gymnast at Lakewood High School;" said Artemis, "Her and her teammates and the school staff were very supportive of me and my daughter throughout my illness. Then when I became the Head Coach of the team I wanted to help raise awareness about the disease, especially among young women as one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month we are dedicating our Sept. 25 th meet to this to help kick it off."
The Colorado High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) has been looking at ways for schools to commemorate "National Breast Cancer Awareness Month," and Artemis feels this will be a perfect way to commemorate.
The Lakewood Tigers will be joined in pinkness by teams from Standley Lake, Columbine and Chatfield as well as the CHSAA judges. Fans are also encouraged to wear pink on the night of the contest. The meet begins at 6pm in the main Gymnasium at Lakewood High School 9700 West 8 th Avenue, Lakewood, CO.
