i9 Sports indoor football teams push toward finale

The i9 Youth Sports indoor flag football season is heading to an exciting conclusion. The season began with a Jamboree Day on Jan. 10, and games have been held every Saturday afternoon at the Golden Goal in Golden. Boys and girls on eighteen teams in four divisions have been vying for league supremacy while keeping active over the winter months, learning new skills and about teamwork, sportsmanship, while having fun.

The Blackhawks, led by veteran i9 Sports coach Eric Christensen, are atop the Jim Thorpe Division (6-7 year olds), averaging scoring more than 31 points a game. The Bulldogs, coached by Josh Wilson, and the Cougars, with Chad Johnson at the helm, will play each other in the final game with second-place on the line. The Crushers, coached by Theo Arguello, have lost a couple of very tight games and are in fourth-place.

The Bulls, coached by Pat Pacheco, are in front of the Red Grange Division (8-9 year olds) and look to cap an undefeated season against Jarod Thiele's second-place Ligers. The Ligers split their two games with the Chris Yancy's Destroyers, who are just one game behind the Ligers. The Gladiators, coached by David Meehan, will next play the Destroyers, who they lost to 18-12 earlier in the season.

The Sammy Baugh Division (10-11 year olds) has been clinched by the Avengers, coached by Brent Gilbertson. Bryce Morgan's Predators, with a 3-1-1 record, have a scant half-game lead over the Vikings, coached by Manuel Martinez. Just behind them are Vic Lombardi's Punishing Teletubbies, who suffered a heart-breaking 28-26 loss to the Vikings in their last game. The Scorpions, led by Ed Kindsvater, will try to vault into fourth-place in their last game, while James Escalera's Rebels will try to get revenge on the Predators, who scored the game's final 28 points in their 49-28 victory.

The Thunderhawks, coached by Mike Hestera, was winless a year ago, but now find themselves undefeated atop the Bronko Nagurski Division (12-14 year olds). The Warriors, coached by Matt Roach, twice game the Thunderhawks tough games before falling, and now must beat Greg Holstine's Rage to secure second-place in the division. Lurking just behind are the Vipers, coached by Jim McIntire, which dropped a tight 38-30 decision to the Rage last week.
