"That's a righteous garden!" The man exclaimed walking into our back yard to pick up his newest Craig's List purchase from my husband.
"Thank you!" I said proudly. However, I have no green genes much less a whole thumb. Yes, it is my yard but truth be told we are members of Sense of Colorado, a community supported agriculture group or CSA. This summer instead of grass clippings a collection of front and back yard plots owned by local residents, ours included will produce arugula, broccoli, basil, beets, cabbage, carrots, chard, cilantro, cucumbers, eggplant, green beans, kale, kohlrabi, leaf lettuce, mesclun mix, onions, parsley, snap peas, peppers, potatoes, radish varieties, salad mix, sage, scallions, spinach, summer squash, tomato varieties, winter squash and zucchini!
My husband and I became increasingly interested in eating locally produced food after reading Barbara Kingsolver's book,
Animal, Vegetable, Miracle as well as increasing the number and amount vegetables in our diet of fast food. However, we do not have the know-how, skill, time or desire to grow our own food but Sense of Colorado enabled us to connect to the land, farming, food and to each other in community in a manageable and rewarding way.
The harvest is just beginning and runs through October and memberships are available. If you are interested in joining this farming adventure one share, feeds 3-4 people and is $75 per month, a 1/2 share feeds 1-2 for $40 per month. Each member commits to working a minimum of four hours per season helping out in the gardens. Discounted working shares are available. The Lakewood distribution site is 485 Kendall Street. We look forward to meeting you there!
