I hope to write about anything and everything that comes into my mind, as long as it is in good taste. I hope to communicate effectively and stimulate thought and conversation. I can't wait to get started!

President Bush is still my hero

I respect and honor President Bush. In fact, he is one of my heroes. If I could pick five people I would most like to meet, he would be one of them. I voted for President Bush in both elections and I do not regret my decision. I am not one of those people who votes for something or someone, then when it does not work out, recants that vote. I voted for him because I believed he was the right person for the job. I still believe it.

I am not saying that he has done a perfect job or that he has not made mistakes. Of course he has. But almost immediately after taking office, he was faced with 9/11 and all that entailed. At the time, most of our country wanted vengeance and justice. They also wanted a strong leader, someone who would not back down. The country - and the world-it seemed, rallied around our president. He could do no wrong. I shudder to think what would have happened if Al Gore had been president during that pivotal time in our nation's history.

Then the war happened. Most of Congress voted in favor of it. Maybe they did so because they thought it would be a quick, in and out thing. I thought that myself. It only proves that we really knew nothing about the enemy and how diligent, determined, and evil it is. The type of people we are up against stop at nothing to push their beliefs and evil vengeance on their enemies, particularly the United States and Israel. We have all heard that they would like nothing better than to wipe both of us off the planet, along with anyone else who does not subscribe to their radical beliefs.

But that is another topic for another time. The point I am trying to make is this - I believe our President has done the best job that he can, given the circumstances and climate of the world today. I admire that he has not backed down, even with huge opposition. We all know about the supposed negative poll numbers. I would like to know just who they allegedly poll. I have never, ever been called or sent a letter asking an opinion regarding our President. Neither has anyone that I know. I find that rather interesting.

Another point I'd like to make is that I don't see those opposed to the war making any kind of solid counter-approach to President Bush's. Everyone is a critic, but no one has a plan. As the popular saying goes, if you aren't part of the solution, you are part of the problem. Anyone can criticize; it takes firm leadership to be decisive, regardless of opinion polls or popularity contests. How would you like to be president, being responsible for an entire country?

Last night, in his State of the Union address, I believe President Bush did an outstanding job. I am sure there are many naysayers; I couldn't care less. Our president asked that we support our troops; the ones already in Iraq and those on the way. He shouldn't even have to ask. We should all support our troops, regardless of how we view the president or the war. They have made great sacrifices and should be applauded for that.

President Bush also asked that we give the new course of action a chance. Regardless of where you stand politically, that seems like a reasonable request. At this point, what do we have to lose? And what better ideas do we have? We need to give it one last chance, or all that has been sacrificed to this point is a total waste.

It is time for our country to support our President. I always have. I always will.

war is war... people die. Very commendable, Erin, for posting your honest opinion, despite ridicule.

President Bush has done an absolutely terrible job of governing this country. There is not a single area of governance where Bush has not failed to succeed with the sole exception of his act of wiping out the budget surplus by enacting a policy of massive welfare benefits to the rich (otherwise known as "tax-cuts"). The fact that you don't know this means that you are not doing a good job of ensuring that you are aware of what is going on in this country, and around the world.

Erin, the lives that were lost fighting this war were not wasted. The military men and women do a job and they do it well in a sensless war that is being faught for the right for us to continue to drive our cars back and forth to the store or so you can car pool. We supported President Bush because we truseted that he gave us good information. He did not and enough is enough. He needs to be Impeached. Emily Robinson
