Blog Entry 32 of 68 The Write Words
I hope to write about anything and everything that comes into my mind, as long as it is in good taste. I hope to communicate effectively and stimulate thought and conversation. I can't wait to get started!

A book worth reading
Contributed by: Erin Di Paolo   on 1/31/2007

I recently finished an outstanding book, Tuesdays with Morrie, by Mitch Albom. It had a tremendous impact on me, as all of Albom's books have. If you have not yet read any of his books, I recommend you do. I don't think you will regret it.

Tuesdays with Morrie is a book about life, death, and a relationship between Albom and his beloved college professor, Morrie Schwartz. Though always close, the two lost track of each other during the years, mostly due to Albom's neglect. They become reacquainted after Albom sees a story about Morrie on the television show 60 Minutes.

After Morrie tells his story to Ted Koppel on national television, Albom visits him at his home. When they reunite, it is as if no time has passed between the two friends, the teacher and his student. Each week, Albom takes a break from his busy sportswriting career, traveling across the country to be with Morrie, who is dying of ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease.

Just as they did in college, Morrie would teach and Albom would listen, trying to soak up all that Morrie told him, like a sponge soaks up water. Every Tuesday, the "lecture" would be on a different topic. Some of the topics included regrets, death, family, emotions, marriage, and forgiveness.

As I read the book, I keep wishing that I had known Morrie. I didn't have any college professors that remotely resembled him in spirit. Albom was indeed a blessed man to sit, week after week, at Morrie's feet, learning from him. Blessed because Morrie had it right; he knew how to live and he knew how to die.

Albom, a confessed workaholic, focused on mostly the wrong things in life, learned from Morrie what he had never known: love each other or perish. Focus on what's important. Material possessions are fleeting. Love is eternal. We all would do well to remember such principles.

A powerful, well-written book almost always causes one to reflect. That is how I can tell if a book is really good, anyway. It causes me to think about my life. It takes me inward. It makes me cry, sometimes sob.

Tuesdays with Morrie is that kind of book.
